What is a Domain Name?

A Domain Name is simply a pointer to an address on the Internet.  Basically, every computer connected to the Internet has an what is called an "IP address." (IP = Internet Protocol)  This IP address may look like this:  208.34.14.206.   Obviously, this kind of address is not easy to remember, so the Internet community created a naming system which basically is a database of Names that point to addresses.

A domain name is a unique Internet address that can be used for web hosting, email, etc.  It allows you to send and receive information at your customized email address.   It is your company's identity on the World Wide Web (www).  If your organization is Your Company, Inc., you could register the domain name of yourcompany.com and your email address could be you@yourcompany.com.

Why do I need a Domain Name?

Domain names are limited and going fast.  A Domain name allows your customers to find you at your unique address on the Internet.  By reserving your name with Geomist Sites now, you can be assured that the name you want will be available when you are ready to use it - next week, next month or next year.

How much does it costs?

Currently, InterNIC, the agency registers all domain names, charges $70 for the first 2 years.  The costs is $35 a year thereafter.  Geomist Sites charges StandardSetup to setup the account on it's servers. That price includes the InterNIC charge.  We just want to make it easier for you.  If you wish to be billed separately by InterNIC, let us know and we will deduct the $70.

Who owns the domain name reserved by Geomist Sites?

You do.  You will be setup as owner of the Domain.  By default, Geomist Sites lists itself as administrative, technical.  InterNIC usually bills you separately, but if you wish, Geomist Sites can handle this billing for you at no additional charge.   Simply choose the InterNIC Billing option on the Order Menu when placing your order.

What is a Top Level Domain (TLD)?

Every Domain name consists of at least two parts.  They are of equal importance when someone is trying to find you.

A TLD is one of the following:

  • com - commercial (most businesses)

  • net - network - infrastructure or machine

  • org - organizations, associations

  • edu - educational institutions

  • mil - military addresses

  • gov - governmental agencies

  • //// - country codes like .to, .uk. or .us

How long can the name be?

The 'yourcompany' in 'yourcompany.com' is known a second level domain and cannot exceed 22 characters. The entire domain name, including the .com, can not exceed 26 characters.   The only valid characters for a domain name are letters, numbers, and a hyphen.

Why can't I just register my domain myself?

InterNIC, the agency that currently registers all domain names, requires that each Domain name be associated with at least 2 name servers to be registered.  This makes sense when you realize that the 'Name' is really a pointer to a specific address.   You can't get listed in a phone book without a phone number, can you?

By registering through Geomist Sites, we give you an address for the name to point to.   Reserve your name now, or better yet, get your web site up and running now.

How long can I keep a name with Geomist Sites?

Indefinitely.  You may keep your domain with us as long as you like.  The only charge will be the InterNIC Domain renewal fee after the first two years to keep it active.   When you are ready to create your web site on our servers, we will treat your account as a Domain Transfer - which entitles you to FREE setup.  You also have the freedom to move your domain at anytime to any other service provider that you choose at no additional charge.  Just notify us.

How long does it take to register my Domain Name?

In most circumstances, your domain will be registered in 24 hours. Once we receive your request, we will process it quickly.  You will be informed by email when your site is ready.  We suggest that you do not publish or advertise your new address until you have received this confirmation.

After you have been registered, it may take a few days for the rest of the Internet to update their servers in order to find you. This is known as the propagation period.

The Domain Name I want is taken.  What do I do?

You can try different variation of the requested name. For example, if 'yourcompany.com' is taken, you might try 'your-company.com', or 'yourcomp.com.' Note that information to the left of the .com is not case sensitive, so variations in capitalization will not work - YOURcompany.com is the same as yourcompany.com.

If you don't want a variation, you could always contact the owner of the name you want and offer to buy it.
